Start Here
A calm first path through paper setup, core creases, and a manageable beginner origami model.
Begin with the paper
Choose a clean square sheet that lies flat and is large enough to control comfortably. Around 6 inches / 15 centimeters works well for many first projects. Use a solid color when you are learning from photographs so edges and layers remain easy to see.
Learn two crease directions
A valley fold brings the paper toward you and leaves the crease like a valley. A mountain fold sends the paper away from you and leaves the crease like a ridge. Rotate the paper when that makes the movement easier to understand.
Check before sharpening
Align the target corners or edges, press a small section near the middle, and inspect both ends. Sharpen the full crease only after the alignment looks right. This reduces permanent mistakes and makes a correction easier.
Choose a forgiving first model
Start with a traditional model that has clear landmarks and a practical finish check, such as a paper boat, jumping frog, or masu box. Work on a clear surface and keep only the paper and instructions within reach.
